The Best of Freedom.
The Best of Structure.
Democracy in Action.

Imagine a place where students discover who they really are and what they are passionate about, while developing a love of natural learning and a deep sense of personal and social responsibility.

Spring Valley School was founded in 1997 and modeled after Sudbury Valley School in Framingham, Mass, which was founded in 1968.

OUR VALUES

DEMOCRACY IN ACTION

“In 1968, a group of parents and educators founded a school based on a clear vision of the individual freedom needed by children to flourish, and of a community governed equally by all its members. The result was a unique combination of liberty and responsibility that has been the hallmark of Sudbury Schools ever since.”

FREEDOM & RESPONSIBILITY
IN ACTION

Without mandatory classes or a set curriculum our students learn to balance freedom with responsibility.  All School Meeting members, from ages 4-19, are required to manage their time and take responsibility for their own actions in a free, democratic environment, where the rules are created through a democratic process and each member has an equal vote.

TRUST
IN ACTION

Spring Valley School trusts that every human being has a natural drive to learn and thrive. Just as infants and toddlers are internally motivated to acquire new skills to explore their world, we believe that this drive continues throughout a person’s life, especially when they are entrusted with this opportunity from a young age and it becomes their norm.

Children do not need to be made to learn about the world, or shown how.
They want to, and they know how.

EMPOWERMENT IN ACTION

At Spring Valley School children experience an environment that values freedom, trust and responsibility, this results in a level of self empowerment that is unique to Sudbury students. Self empowerment cannot be taught. It develops naturally through experience and inspiration. It is dependent upon self knowledge and confidence, which are earned through taking action, making challenging decisions, speaking up, and trusting oneself. These life skills result in an awareness of individual responsibility that lends itself to greater personal fulfillment and a more compassionate use of power and leadership.
